Solubility of tungsten in α iron is up to about 32%, decreases with decreasing temperature, in γ-iron to about 6% and
in austenite with 0.25% of carbon to 11%. This component increases the tensile and creep resistance of steel, slightly
improves fine-grainity of steel. Steel with higher content of tungsten is resistant to indulgent operation of warmth what
makes the high hardness retain up to the temperature of 600C, forms in the steel very hard and abrasion resistant carbides.
It is an essential component of high speed steel and some tool steels.
