Silicon dissolves in γ iron to about 2%, with the increase of carbon of about 0.35% the solubility is 9%,
in α iron the solubility of silicon is up to about 18.5%. Silicon is used in steel melting as a deoxidizer,
as an alloying addition increases the hardness, tensile resistance, and especially elasticity, adversely influences,
among the others, the impact strength.
Silicon is used in greater amounts in the spring steels most often in combination with chromium or vanadium because
it increases the corrosion resistance of the gas and is also used in heat resistant steels.
Silicon is also an essential component of the magnetic plates and the generators.
