Heat resistant steels are a group of steel used in the production of machinery and equipment working at high temperatures.
The carbon content in heat-resistant steel does not exceed 0.2% (except from rocker steel) and chromium content usually exceed 12%.
Basic properties of these steels are:
heat resistance - resistance to oxidizing gases at high temperatures. To determine the heat resistance, practical test is performed:
a sample of steel is heated to a certain temperature for 24h, next it is cooled to thetemperature of 20 ° C, the action is repeated
five times, then the scale is removed from the surface and material is weighted. Steel can be classified as heat-resistant
(up to a certain temperature) if, after such a trial loss of material does not exceed 1g (m 2 hr) at this temperature, and if at a
temperature higher by 50 C loss of the material is less than 2g (m 2 * h) creep resistance - the ability to transfer mechanical stress
at high temperatures, the so-called creep strength.
Heat resistance provides the usage of alloying elements to steel: chromium, aluminum, silicon, which form the oxides on the material
surface, make further oxidation harder. Creep resistance is achieved by the addition of alloying molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten,
titanium, cobalt, chromium, silicon, which increases the binding energy of atoms.
To the group of heat resistant steel valve steel is also included which is used for making valves for internal combustion engines.
Valve steel is characterized by high mechanical strength, good abrasion resistance, resistance to fragility in conditions of hot
corrosive substances contained in exhaust gases of internal combustion engines.
In the grade marking, if a digit appears at the beginning it means the content of carbon, the letters mean:
H - Chrome
S - Silicon
N - Nickel
J - Aluminium
W - Tungsten
M - Molybdenum
T - Titanium
G - Manganese
letters following the figures indicate the average amount of the alloy component in %.
For example, H20N20S2 grade marking means steel with an average content of chromium 20%, nickel 20%, 2% of silicon
